New York: All candidates backed by Mamdani win in the New York Democratic primary elections

  • Zohran Mamdani saw a total victory for his endorsed candidates.
  • Brad Lander defeated Dan Goldman in the 10th congressional district.
  • Left wing candidates won several seats in New York City primaries.

Dan Goldman suffered a loss in a New York primary. The result was a clean sweep for those backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Brad Lander beat the two term incumbent by 65.7% to 34.1% in the 10th district. This race highlighted huge party splits over the Israel-Gaza war.

Lander, who had the backing of Bernie Sanders, has called the Gaza situation a genocide. On the other hand Goldman was supported by pro-Israel groups. A local coffee shop in Brooklyn even posted that Goldman was not welcome there before deleting the text later.

Mamdani backed candidates won several primary races

Claire Valdez won the 7th district by removing Antonio Reynoso. Meanwhile Darializa Avila Chevalier took the 13th district. She is a doctoral student who joined protests at Columbia University. Chevalier ousted Adriano Espaillat who served five terms and led the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Mamdani praised Chevalier as a person « of clarity, of conscience and of conviction ». He also liked Lander’s approach. Lander believes the district wants leadership ready to fight authoritarianism rather than fold. This was a test of the mayor’s political clout.

In the 12th district Jack Schlossberg lost to Micah Lasher. Schlossberg, the grandson of JFK, was a political newcomer. George Conway also ran but Conway managed to win only about 6% of the total vote. Mamdani did not pick a side in that particular race.

The mayor says he wants better Democrats who put working people first. However, Washington leaders worry about swing voters. Mamdani’s picks want to abolish ICE and tax the rich. Hakeem Jeffries noted that a few primaries will not reshape House Democrats.
