Everton fan arrested as police investigate alleged racist abuse of Semenyo

Fan arrested for racist abuse during Everton match

  • A 71-year-old man has been arrested for alleged racist abuse during a Premier League fixture.
  • Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi were both targeted by discriminatory comments during and after the match.
  • Everton FC and Merseyside Police are collaborating on an investigation into the public order offence.

Authorities in Merseyside have apprehended a man following a Premier League encounter between Everton and Manchester City. The individual, a 71-year-old from Nottinghamshire, is suspected of committing a racially aggravated public order offence during the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

The arrest followed reports from stewards and other supporters who witnessed the fan shouting racist abuse. The suspect has been released on bail with strict conditions, including a ban from entering any sports stadium within one mile for four hours before and after kick-off.

Everton has condemned the incident, stating that discrimination and racism have no place in sport or society. The club has pledged to take the strongest possible action in accordance with its zero-tolerance policy and is supporting the ongoing police investigation.

Repeated targets of discrimination

This incident marks the second time this season that Antoine Semenyo, 26, has faced such abuse. Previously, while playing for Bournemouth in a 4-2 loss to Liverpool, the Ghana international reported being racially abused by a spectator during the opening game.

In response to these experiences, Semenyo has called for more rigorous measures to combat racism in football. He suggested that stricter penalties, including potential prison sentences, should be introduced for those who are convicted of using such abusive language.

Manchester City has expressed its disappointment over further attacks, revealing that defender Marc Guehi, 25, was also targeted. The club highlighted a series of vile racist social media posts directed at Guehi following the conclusion of the match.

Club and police response

Manchester City praised the swift coordination between Everton and the Merseyside Police in handling the stadium incident. The club confirmed it continues to offer full support to both Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi following these discriminatory attacks.

The police have confirmed that the investigation remains active as they work alongside the club. This comes amidst a wider effort to ensure that stadiums remain safe environments for all players and spectators across the English game.
