- Lee Milne received an eight year sentence for the death of his wife.
- This case marks a legal first for jury convictions involving coercive control.
- The victim took her own life following prolonged physical and mental abuse.
A 40 year old man from Dundee has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Lee Milne was found guilty of culpable homicide after his wife took her own life. This ruling is a major milestone as it is the first jury conviction in Britain for killing a partner through prolonged abuse.
The victim, 28 year old Kimberly Milne, jumped from a bridge in July 2023. Before her death, she endured physical and psychological torture for about 18 months. Lee Milne controlled her money, isolated her from family, and repeatedly choked her during their relationship.
On the final night, Milne ignored bail conditions to meet Kimberly. He drove erratically and shouted at her before following her onto a bridge. Witnesses saw a distraught Kimberly trapped in his arms shortly before she fell to her death over the A90 road.
The court heard that Kimberly lived in terror, even sleeping with a knife for protection. Milne used coercive and controlling behavior to exploit her vulnerabilities. He also threatened to kill himself whenever Kimberly attempted to end their marriage.
Judge Lady Drummond ordered an additional three years of license after his release. She stated that a long custodial sentence was the only appropriate disposal. The judge noted that Milne remained a high risk to the public and minimized his actions.
The prosecution argued that the abuse was a significant factor in the suicide. They described how victims become trapped in webs created by abusers. Kimberly’s family, who described her as one in a million, expressed their devastation during the sentencing.
