Organizers for Wireless festival continue to support their choice to include Kanye West onstage

  • Wireless festival organizers are keeping Kanye West as a headliner despite intense criticism over antisemitic behavior.
  • The promoter defends the decision as an act of forgiveness tied to the artist’s mental health.
  • Major sponsors have withdrawn support while government officials consider banning the rapper from entering the country.

The organizers of the Wireless festival are standing by their decision to feature Kanye West as a headliner. This comes after widespread condemnation regarding the rapper’s history of antisemitic remarks and expressions of admiration for Nazi figures. Despite public pressure to cancel his appearance, the event management confirms West is still scheduled to perform.

Festival Republic director Melvin Benn argues that the event prioritizes musical performance rather than providing a platform for personal ideologies. He emphasized that West will perform popular songs enjoyed by millions on streaming services. Benn described himself as a lifelong anti-fascist and supporter of the Jewish community while explaining his personal shift toward forgiveness.

Strong opposition has emerged from the highest levels of the British government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and several ministers expressed profound concern over the booking, citing West’s previous praise for Nazism. Lawmakers are currently reviewing West’s permission to enter the country, suggesting a potential legal ban could prevent his scheduled appearance from happening.

The controversy has sparked a significant corporate backlash, leading multiple high-profile sponsors to sever ties. Brands such as Pepsi, Diageo, and AB InBev have officially withdrawn their financial support for the festival. Additionally, PayPal has confirmed it will no longer participate in any future promotional materials for the three-day hip-hop event.

Benn attributes West’s past erratic behavior to documented mental health struggles, including a bipolar-1 diagnosis and brain injury. The promoter urged the public to consider second chances instead of immediate condemnation. However, Jewish community leaders argue that the main stage of a major festival is not the appropriate place to test his rehabilitation.

While West recently apologized for his actions through a public advertisement, critics remain skeptical of the timing and sincerity of his remorse. The Board of Deputies of British Jews maintains that the festival is profiting from a self-proclaimed Nazi. If the performance proceeds, it will be the rapper’s first United Kingdom appearance since 2015.
