After recovering from brain surgery, Woodland achieved a moving first victory on the golf course

  • Gary Woodland won the Houston Open marking his first professional victory in seven years.
  • The American golfer recently overcame a brain tumor operation and a PTSD diagnosis.
  • Woodland finished twenty-one under par to defeat Nicolai Hojgaard by five strokes.

Gary Woodland experienced an emotional breakthrough at the Houston Open, securing his 1st title since 2019. The 41 year old American finished the tournament at 21 under par. This victory represents a major personal milestone following a period of intense health challenges, including brain surgery in September 2023.

The golfer previously shared his ongoing struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, which was diagnosed 1 year ago. After sinking his final putt at Memorial Park, Woodland broke into tears while hugging his wife, Gabby. He credited his support team and family for helping him through his long recovery process.

During the final round, Woodland shot a 67 to maintain his lead over the field. Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard applied pressure but ultimately finished 5 strokes behind the winner. Woodland’s performance was defined by remarkable calm and control, especially during a front nine that included 4 birdies to extend his advantage.

Hojgaard faced difficulties early in his round, including 2 bogeys and 1 double bogey within the first 10 holes. Although he narrowed the gap late in the day, Woodland remained steady. The crowd responded with rapturous applause and chants as the veteran golfer neared the conclusion of his 5th career PGA Tour win.

Other notable finishers included Johnny Keefer and Min Woo Lee, who shared 3rd place at 15 under. Looking forward, Woodland expressed confidence in his current form ahead of the Masters. He stated that his game feels better than it ever has despite the mental and physical hurdles he continues to manage.

Woodland hopes his journey inspires others facing similar hardships to continue their own battles. He emphasized the importance of perseverance and resilience during his difficult 2 year journey. By not giving up on his career, he proved that returning to the winner’s circle was possible despite the odds.
