Officers investigate the residence of an ex-Labour politician’s spouse regarding a Chinese espionage probe

  • Police search the home of James Robinson during an investigation into an alleged Chinese surveillance network.
  • Three former Labour party employees were arrested on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service.
  • Member of Parliament Joani Reid temporarily resigns while the inquiry involves her husband and others.

Officers involved in a major national security inquiry recently carried out a search warrant at the residence of James Robinson. Robinson, a former aide to Tom Watson, shares the home with his wife, Gloria De Piero. No arrests were made during this specific intervention, and the homeowner confirms he has not been questioned or detained.

The investigation focuses on alleged foreign intelligence activities linked to China. Robinson issued a statement to clarify that his connection to the case is limited to the police visit. He currently leads Woburn Partners and previously worked as a media correspondent. De Piero is not suspected of any direct involvement or legal wrongdoing.

Three other individuals with past ties to the Labour Party were recently taken into custody. These men, aged 39, 43, and 68, face accusations under the National Security Act. Authorities have since released them on bail while the probe continues. Evidence collection is ongoing as police examine the reach of the suspected network.

David Taylor, one of those arrested, is the husband of MP Joani Reid. He served as a special adviser to Peter Hain and worked as a lobbyist in recent years. Due to the severity of the claims, Reid has decided to withdraw from the parliamentary party temporarily. This move follows Taylor’s suspension from the party organization.

In Wales, authorities also targeted the home of Martin Shipton, a 72 year old journalist. Shipton provided a voluntary statement to officers regarding a previous trip taken to Hong Kong. He described the early morning raid as a highly disorienting and difficult experience. Shipton has known Taylor for approximately 25 years through professional circles.

The broader inquiry involves several former advisers, including Matthew Aplin and Steve Jones. Jones previously assisted high ranking political figures in the Welsh government and the chief whip’s office. Officials maintain that the investigation is extremely serious. They have declined to offer further comments while the active legal proceedings are currently underway.
