A mayor from the Reform party in Lincolnshire has actively engaged with an American oil and gas executive to explore the possibility of fracking operations in the county. This engagement was revealed through official records obtained via freedom of information requests, showing sustained contact between local leadership and energy industry representatives.
The initial outreach occurred after a British subsidiary discovered significant natural gas reserves in the Gainsborough Trough region. The mayor personally contacted the company expressing enthusiasm about potential development opportunities. The company’s leadership responded quickly and arranged multiple meetings to discuss advancing the project and building political support for its implementation.
Fracking has been effectively prohibited in England since 2019 due to earthquake concerns, yet the mayor has consistently demonstrated strong support for reversing this restriction. Documents presented at meetings included detailed responses to common criticisms of the practice, alongside promotional materials emphasizing its perceived advantages over renewable energy sources.
The American owner behind these operations maintains significant political connections and has previously expressed skepticism about climate initiatives. He has contributed to organizations questioning environmental policies and has characterized net zero commitments as problematic approaches. His business interests focus on conventional energy extraction rather than renewable alternatives.

Public polling indicates 51% of the population opposes fracking, and even other Reform-controlled councils in neighboring regions have rejected similar gas extraction proposals. Conservative council members have questioned the transparency of promotional messaging surrounding the initiative.
Beyond fracking advocacy, the mayor’s administration has also opposed renewable energy projects. A community solar installation designed to reduce operational costs for public facilities faced unexpected resistance following the mayor’s election, resulting in scaled-back proposals that compromised the project’s effectiveness.
The mayor subsequently launched an anti-renewable energy campaign alongside allies, publicly promoting fossil fuel extraction as a priority. Additional visits to onshore oil and gas facilities followed, with council representatives touring operational sites and establishing further connections with industry stakeholders holding extraction licenses in the region.
