A 76-year-old man who served as a Christian camp leader has received a prison sentence of 23 years and 10 months for systematically abusing young boys. Jon Ruben, a retired veterinarian from Nottinghamshire, exploited his position of trust within religious and youth organizations to carry out his crimes over an extended period. The court determined he would serve an additional time on licence, extending his total sentence to nearly 32 years.
Ruben’s offences centered on a summer camp he operated in Leicestershire during July 2025. He laced sweets with tranquillising drugs given to boys during weekend activities, rendering them unconscious. The sedation allowed him to undress the children and select victims for sexual abuse while they slept. He also drugged his wife’s tea to prevent her from discovering his nocturnal movements away from their shared bedroom.
The defendant obtained what he believed was temazepam through the dark web for his criminal purposes. Testing revealed at least one victim had liquid Xanax in their system. Ruben used Viagra to facilitate his offences, demonstrating calculated premeditation. His arrest occurred in July following reports that eight children and one adult became ill at the camp, prompting an investigation that exposed his long history of abuse.
Legal proceedings revealed Ruben’s deliberate manipulation of his religious standing. He served on the church council at St Peter’s in Ruddington and volunteered with youth programmes, creating access to vulnerable children. He exploited the “cloak of Christianity” to gain trust from families who believed their children were safe under his supervision. The judge emphasized that his crimes represented carefully orchestrated exploitation of children through meticulous preparation and psychological manipulation.
Ruben pleaded guilty to multiple charges including sexual assault of children under 13, penetration offences, child cruelty counts, and drug-related crimes. His wife expressed feeling profoundly betrayed, describing him as a “sadistic, monstrous paedophile” who spent decades presenting himself as honourable. Families of victims stated their children had respected and admired him, only to discover he was a devious predator who stole their childhood safety. Police continue investigating his involvement with various organizations over more than two decades.
