Keir Starmer will remain as an MP but is unlikely to seek a cabinet role

  • Keir Starmer will keep his Holborn and St Pancras seat.
  • The outgoing leader is unlikely to accept a cabinet position.
  • Andy Burnham is expected to enter Downing Street on 17 July.

Downing Street confirmed that Keir Starmer stays as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras. The seat holds an 11,000 majority making it a prime target for Greens. He will serve out his term in the Commons as a Labour member after leaving the premiership.

A spokesperson noted Starmer does not anticipate a role in the cabinet of Andy Burnham. Some MPs mentioned a foreign secretary post, yet Starmer told his colleagues «*This is the end of my journey, but this is not the end of yours.*»

The relationship between the two men is strained, as seen in a frosty meeting lasting one hour. This talk happened away from No 10. One source mentioned, «*Keir has shown time and again that he will put the interests of the country first but it is fair to say the meeting wasn’t the warmest*»

Starmer will attend the Nato summit in Ankara as one of his last acts. He plans to deliver the defence investment plan before he departs. He expressed pride in the landslide victory that caused the biggest loss for the Tory party in history.

The successor is granted access talks with the civil service and Antonia Romeo. No new major policy or spending commitments are allowed before the transition, except for the settled defence plan. This process usually happens for opposition leaders before elections.

If Andy Burnham is unopposed the transition to Downing Street occurs on 17 July. The outgoing leader mentioned missing the weekly prime minister’s questions sessions during a recent appearance. This handvoer is handled with specific restrictions on new spending commitments.
