Emergency services were called to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle in Stanton Lees at about 13:40 BST on Monday. A 26-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. A murder investigation has been launched after a body was found in the Peak District.
The man is not formally identified yet but his family were notified. They are being assisted by specialist officers. The Derby Mountain Rescue Team assisted East Midlands Ambulance Service during the initial response to the incident.
Police seek witnesses from the summer solstice celebrations
Det Insp Tony Owen noted that many people visited the area over the weekend. He stated « We know that there have been a lot of people in the area over the weekend celebrating the summer solstice and this incident will undoubtedly be shocking and distressing ».
The officer from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit urged attendees to come forward. He said « it is vital that anyone who was in attendance at any point over the weekend speaks to officers ». Police presence will be increased in the area over the coming days.
The 4,000-year-old monument is a hub for marking the longest day of the year, which fell on 21 June. The site represents nine petrified ladies and a fossilised fiddler. The case is being handled by the local force.
