Antonelli delivers a dramatic performance as he steps up his level for BBC

  • Kimi Antonelli has secured a dramatic third consecutive victory at the Miami Grand Prix.
  • The 19-year-old Italian driver is now breaking records alongside legendary Formula 1 champions.
  • Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is working to keep the young prodigy grounded.

The sporting world is buzzing after Kimi Antonelli claimed a stunning win in Miami, marking three straight victories. Damon Hill expressed amazement at the teenager’s potential and his ability to handle the immense pressure of the current season so effectively.

This achievement places the Italian in an elite bracket of racing history. He is only the third driver ever to secure three consecutive pole positions for his first three races, joining the ranks of legends like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna.

A shift in team dynamics

The surge in form has created a stark contrast within the Mercedes garage. George Russell, previously the favourite, now trails by 20 points. The Briton has struggled with pace in Miami and various technical misfortunes in China and Japan.

While Russell won the season opener in Australia, he has since faced a difficult run. He admitted his performance was poor in Miami, noting a lack of connection with the circuit’s low-grip surface and slow corners.

The road to victory

Antonelli’s Miami triumph was not without its challenges, including a poor start. However, he managed to overtake Lando Norris during the pit stop sequence, utilizing a blistering first lap out of the pits to seize the lead.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella noted that while they had the margin to lead, a series of errors and Antonelli’s aggression allowed the Mercedes driver to sweep past and maintain the lead until the finish.

Mentorship and expectations

Toto Wolff discovered Antonelli at age 11 and has mentored him since his karting days. Wolff took a significant risk by promoting him as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton after only two years of racing.

The team principal believes in a long-term strategy for the driver. Wolff emphasized the need to manage the Italian public’s expectations to ensure that a future mistake does not shatter the young driver’s confidence.

Maintaining a grounded perspective

To combat the hype, Wolff is relying on the support of the driver’s family. Marco Antonelli is helping his son remain humble amidst the sudden superstar status he shares with figures like tennis star Jannik Sinner.

Despite the concerns over a “rush of blood,” the evidence suggests the talent is real. Damon Hill believes the recent performances justify the confidence that Antonelli could eventually become a world champion.
