- Essa Suleiman faces charges after stabbing two Jewish men in North West London.
- The UK terrorism threat level has been elevated to severe by national authorities.
- Authorities are reviewing planned pro-Palestine marches following the recent violent attack.
A 45-year-old man named Essa Suleiman is facing legal action. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder and possessing a bladed weapon. This follows a violent incident in Golders Green, North West London, where two Jewish men were stabbed on Wednesday.
The victims were identified as 34-year-old Shloime Rand and 76-year-old Moshe Ben Baila. Rand has been discharged to recover at home after receiving stitches. Meanwhile, Ben Baila, also known as Moshe Shine, remains in a stable condition at the hospital.
Suleiman arrived in the UK legally during the 1990s from Somalia. In 2020, he was reported to the government anti-extremism program called Prevent. However, that specific case was closed later that same year. He was scheduled for a court appearance on Friday.
The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has raised the UK threat level to severe. This means an attack is now considered highly likely. The Home Office stated this change was not based only on the Golders Green event, as the threat had been rising.
Metropolitan police are now assessing pro-Palestine marches across the country. This comes as the Stop the War Coalition plans a large London demonstration on 16 May. The event marks Nakba Day, commemorating the 1948 displacement of Palestinians during Israel’s creation.
Commander Helen Flanagan expressed support for the victims during their recovery. She emphasized the determination to get justice for the victims. Flanagan also urged the public to stop speculating about the case to allow the legal process to proceed.
