Two Jewish men, aged 34 and 76, are currently stable in the hospital after a stabbing in Golders Green. Police are treating the incident as terrorism, noting the attacker allegedly targeted anyone visibly Jewish. The suspect is a 45-year-old British national born in Somalia with a history of mental health issues.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the scene to meet community leaders and emergency staff. He urged the public to acknowledge the pain of Jews. During the visit, Stop the Hate activists heckled him, with one person calling him a traitor for failing to ensure community safety.
The government is investing 25 million pounds to increase security for Jewish sites. This funding will boost police presence near schools, synagogues, and community centers. Shabana Mahmood affirmed that the state will do everything possible to protect British Jews from fear and intimidation.
Starmer criticized those who march with Hamas supporters or use phrases like globalise the Intifada. He stated that such actions venerate the murder of Jewish people. While defending peaceful protest, he argued that calling for terrorism should lead to criminal prosecution.
New laws will be fast-tracked to tackle state-sponsored threats from Iran and shut down extremist charities. These measures, expected in the king’s speech on 13 May, aim to block hate preachers from entering the UK or accessing campuses and streets.
The Prime Minister described antisemitism as a deep-rooted hatred that grows if ignored. He pledged to speed up sentencing for attacks to create a stronger deterrent. This comes after several arson attacks on Jewish targets in London since March.
