Turkey and F1: a major return set for 2027

  • The Turkish Grand Prix returns to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027.
  • Istanbul Park will host the race event until at least 2031.
  • The schedule will maintain a maximum limit of 24 total races.

Formula 1 has confirmed that Turkey will rejoin the racing calendar in 2027. This marks the first time in six years that the event returns. The races will be held at the Istanbul Park circuit. This agreement ensures the venue remains on the schedule until 2031.

The race will not increase the total calendar size beyond 24 races. Instead, it will occupy slots as other contracts end. Some events may transition to a rotational system. For example, Belgium will host four races in six years between 2026 and 2031.

Istanbul Park is a historic site for the sport. It hosted events from 2005 to 2011. It also appeared in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic. Notably, Lewis Hamilton won his seventh title there during the 2020 season.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted the strong local passion for the sport. He noted that nearly 19 million people in Turkey watch the races. Furthermore, about 7.5 million followers engage with the sport via social media platforms.

Erdogan believes this return proves confidence in Turkey’s organizational capacity. He cited the nation’s modern healthcare and sports infrastructure. He also emphasized the importance of Turkish hospitality for visiting fans and racing teams.

Stefano Domenicali, the F1 president, praised Istanbul as a cultural gateway between Europe and Asia. He described the city as a blend of tradition and innovation. He considers the circuit to be one of the most challenging in the world.
