A previous manager of the male squad praises the Iranian female players as heroes

  • The Iranian women’s football team refused to sing the anthem during a significant international match.
  • Former coach Afshin Ghotbi praised the players as heroes for their brave stand in Australia.
  • Five team members received humanitarian visas to remain in Australia following safety concerns at home.

Former national coach Afshin Ghotbi has lauded the Iranian women’s football squad as heroic figures. Their decision to remain silent during the national anthem at the Asian Cup served as a powerful statement. This act of defiance occurred during their first game against South Korea on 2 March, highlighting deep internal tensions.

The silent protest unfolded against a backdrop of intense regional violence. Following military strikes by the United States and Israel on 28 February, conflict has escalated significantly. Iran responded by launching drones and missiles at multiple targets. These included four Gulf nations that harbor American military installations, specifically Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the Emirates.

Internal instability has also reached critical levels within the country recently. Human rights organizations report that security forces killed at least 7,000 people during anti-government demonstrations. While some citizens expected recent strikes to trigger a total regime change, those outcomes remain uncertain. Such turmoil creates immense pressure for athletes representing the nation abroad.

Ghotbi expressed deep empathy for the squad’s difficult psychological position. He noted that players must decide between government loyalty and public support before every kickoff. If they participate in state ceremonies, they face backlash from fans. Conversely, refusing to sing puts them at personal risk from authorities, creating a heavy emotional burden.

The team’s safety became a global concern after their initial protest. An Iranian state television host labeled the women traitors deserving of punishment. This rhetoric intensified fears regarding their return home. Consequently, 5 players were granted humanitarian visas to stay in Australia, while the rest of the delegation departed on a Tuesday night flight.

Looking toward the 2026 World Cup, Iran’s participation remains highly questionable. The killing of high-ranking leadership in February has thrown sports planning into total chaos. While Donald Trump indicated Iran is technically welcome at the tournament, he suggested their presence might be inappropriate for their own safety. The Iranian sports minister signaled a likely withdrawal.

Ghotbi remains saddened by the potential absence of the men’s team. Having lived in the United States since age 13, he recalled the unifying power of football during past matches. He cited a year 2000 friendly in Pasadena where 50,181 fans celebrated peace. He believes these athletes represent a fundamental struggle for the freedom to be themselves.
