Trump receives a call from Starmer following presidential criticism regarding British military involvement in Iran

  • Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with Donald Trump to fix relations after disagreements over Iran.
  • Tony Blair faced significant backlash from Labour figures for suggesting the UK should support US strikes.
  • Four US bombers arrived at a British airbase to conduct defensive operations against Iranian missile threats.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer initiated a conversation with Donald Trump on Sunday afternoon to address the diplomatic friction regarding the conflict in Iran. This follows public criticism from the US president, who recently suggested that British assistance was unnecessary after military actions had already commenced. The leaders focused on the ongoing military cooperation between their two nations.

The discussion centered on the strategic use of RAF bases to support regional defense efforts in the Middle East. While Trump previously mocked Starmer on social media for joining conflicts late, the official report from Downing Street emphasized mutual support. Starmer expressed condolences for 6 US soldiers who lost their lives during recent hostilities in the region.

This diplomatic outreach occurred amidst a growing internal row within the Labour Party triggered by Tony Blair. The former prime minister argued that the UK should have backed every US strike from the start. Blair suggested that an indispensable ally must show up whenever requested, sparking anger among current government members and backbenchers alike.

Yvette Cooper publicly rejected Blair’s stance, insisting that the United Kingdom must learn from historical mistakes made during the Iraq War. She stated that Starmer is acting solely in the national interest of British citizens. Cooper clarified that blindly following every US military directive is not beneficial for the country or its global security objectives.

Despite previous political tension, military collaboration remains active as 4 US bombers landed at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. These aircraft arrived to engage in specific defensive operations intended to neutralize Iranian missile threats. These B-1 Lancers measure 45 metres long and can carry 24 cruise missiles each for these high-stakes missions.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that 1 bomber arrived on Friday, while 3 more landed Saturday morning. Starmer had previously authorized the use of UK soil for defensive actions against missile sites located in Iran. This deployment happens as Washington signals that military strikes will surge significantly in the coming days across the region.
