A killer receives a life sentence after murdering a woman and three young children

  • A judge sentenced Sharaz Ali to a whole-life order for a fatal arson attack in Bradford.
  • The deliberate fire killed twenty-nine-year-old Bryonie Gawith and her three very young children.
  • Accomplice Calum Sunderland received a life sentence with an eighteen-year minimum for his involvement.

A 40-year-old man has received a whole-life prison sentence for a catastrophic arson attack in Bradford. Sharaz Ali killed 29-year-old Bryonie Gawith and her three children, aged nine, five, and 22 months. The court heard that Ali will never be released following his conviction for the 21 August 2024 murders.

The tragedy was motivated by jealousy and substance abuse. Ali arrived at the property under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Although his former partner, Antonia Gawith, managed to escape the flames, her sister and nieces and nephew perished. The judge stated Ali intended to wipe out a family during the assault.

Antonia Gawith provided a harrowing personal testimony at the sentencing hearing. She expressed deep torment because she was the intended target of the attack. Knowing her sister and children died in her place has left her haunted. She described the victims as her joy and her babies while addressing the court.

Mr Justice Hilliard praised Bryonie Gawith for her immense courage and sacrifice. Evidence showed she remained at the top of the stairs to protect her children rather than fleeing. The judge noted that the children were viewed as acceptable collateral damage by Ali due to his intense hatred for Bryonie.

A second man, Calum Sunderland, was also sentenced for his role. The 27-year-old crack-cocaine addict kicked in the door to facilitate the arson. He was jailed for life with a minimum term of 18 years for manslaughter. The judge emphasized that Sunderland knowingly participated in an extraordinarily dangerous scheme.

Ali himself suffered severe injuries during the fire he started. He sustained burns to 70 percent of his body and lost several fingers. Despite initially being expected to die, he emerged from a coma to stand trial. Prosecutors proved the attack involved substantial premeditation and planning by the defendant.
