Former Prince Andrew has experienced an extraordinary fall, yet Australia’s PM indicates this won’t trigger a new republic referendum

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, brother of King Charles III, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was taken to a police station in Norfolk for questioning about allegations involving the sharing of confidential material with convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Albanese described the arrest as an “extraordinary fall from grace.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but noted his limited ability to comment due to ongoing court proceedings. The case centers on classified documents allegedly forwarded inappropriately to an ineligible recipient. Albanese emphasized that there are broader concerns surrounding Mountbatten-Windsor beyond the document-sharing allegations. He indicated the public would follow developments closely as the matter progressed through legal channels.

Despite his personal conviction that Australia should eventually have its own head of state, Albanese ruled out pursuing another republic referendum. He noted that referendums are difficult to pass in Australia and that his government had no plans for one. He expressed respect for King Charles and Queen Camilla, acknowledging his positive relationship with the king and noting the monarch’s genuine affection for Australia.

Albanese had previously committed to shelving republic discussions. In October 2023, following the failure of the Indigenous voice to parliament referendum, he ruled out another referendum during his first term. He subsequently eliminated the ministerial portfolio dedicated to republic matters in July 2024. Last September, he reiterated that the government’s focus remained on cost of living issues rather than constitutional change.

The prime minister characterized Mountbatten-Windsor’s situation as a dramatic reversal of fortune. He reflected on how someone who had enjoyed such privilege and prominence could experience such a marked decline. Mountbatten-Windsor has denied all allegations against him. Albanese stated he was unaware of any active investigation or inquiry within Australia connected to the Epstein-related revelations.
