MP Dan Norris was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and upskirting charges

An independent MP and former Labour minister has faced a new arrest on suspicion of multiple serious offences including rape, sexual assault, voyeurism, and upskirting. Dan Norris, aged 66, previously won his seat by defeating a prominent Conservative politician in the most recent general election. The Labour Party suspended him following his initial arrest last year.

Avon and Somerset Police initiated their investigation into a man in his sixties during December 2024. His first arrest occurred in April 2025 on suspicion of sexual offences targeting a child, as well as rape, child abduction, and misconduct in public office. The investigation has since expanded significantly in scope and direction.

The subsequent arrest relates to allegations of raping one woman and sexually assaulting another, alongside voyeurism and upskirting offences allegedly committed against multiple women. Police confirmed they are no longer investigating sexual offence claims involving children. However, the original rape and misconduct inquiry continues, with all alleged incidents occurring across a two-decade span from the 2000s through 2020s.

A police statement emphasized the complexity and sensitivity of sexual offence investigations, noting that substantial time is required for thorough inquiries. Victims remain informed of all developments and continue receiving available support services. The individual remains on conditional bail pending further proceedings.

Norris held significant positions within British politics. He served in parliament from 1997 to 2010 representing another constituency covering similar geographical areas. Under previous prime ministers, he worked as a junior minister and assistant whip. More recently, he served as directly elected mayor of the West of England until stepping down after his 2024 parliamentary election. Following his arrest, he resigned from his position leading an animal welfare charity.
