The trade body representing 65% of UK petrol stations recently entered a sharp dispute with the government. The Petrol Retailers Association accused ministers of using dangerous rhetoric that led to the abuse of forecourt employees. Terms such as price gouging and ripping off were cited as primary triggers for public hostility toward staff.
Global oil markets have surged following military strikes involving 140.6p for petrol and 159.18p for diesel. This represents the fastest price increase since 2022 as costs hit their highest point in 18 months. Executive director Gordon Balmer noted that many retailers are currently operating on razor-thin or negative margins despite the rising prices.
The watchdog group, the Competition and Markets Authority, is now on high alert for unjustifiable rises in fuel costs. Retailers must provide detailed revenue and sales data to the authority to ensure transparency. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized that the government will not tolerate profiteering during the ongoing international conflict in Iran.
A planned meeting with Chancellor Rachel Reeves was nearly derailed when the PRA initially withdrew in protest. However, the group eventually attended the 11 Downing Street session to engage in constructive discussion with officials. While the talks were productive, Balmer noted that no apology was offered for the inflammatory language previously used by ministers.

This system aims to boost competition by allowing drivers to locate the cheapest fuel in real time. Officials highlighted that price transparency remains a priority to protect consumers from the extreme disparities discovered at various stations across the country.
