Proposed Iranian inclusion at the World Cup receives support from Donald Trump says Infantino

  • Donald Trump confirmed Iran remains welcome at the upcoming World Cup despite ongoing military conflicts.
  • Fifa president Gianni Infantino met with Trump to discuss preparations for the summer football tournament.
  • Concerns regarding Iran’s participation grew after recent strikes in the region and rising geopolitical tensions.

The upcoming World Cup remains open to the Iranian national team despite the active state of war between nations. Fifa president Gianni Infantino recently met with US President Donald Trump to coordinate for the event. During their Tuesday discussions, Trump assured that the Iranian squad is welcome to compete on American soil this summer.

This major sporting event is scheduled to begin on 11 June across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Recently, the participation of Iran became shrouded in significant doubt following military strikes involving the US and Israel. These actions resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggered retaliatory missile strikes.

Infantino expressed his gratitude for the presidential support during this volatile period. He emphasized that the global tournament serves as a vital tool to unite people through football. While Trump previously mentioned he did not care if they played, he has now formally reiterated their invitation to the prestigious competition.

Iran is set to play three group stage matches within the United States. They will face New Zealand in Los Angeles on 15 June and Belgium on 21 June. Their final scheduled fixture is against Egypt on 26 June in Seattle. However, local football officials remain pessimistic about the current situation in their home country.

Regional instability has already impacted various players and sports organizations. In Australia, the government recently granted humanitarian visas to seven people from Iran’s women’s team. While most of the squad departed after the Asian Cup, several members sought asylum due to persistent safety concerns regarding their return to the region.
