The collision occurred on the A130 in South Benfleet near Sadlers Farm roundabout. A paramedic and an off-duty police officer sustained severe injuries during the second crash, with five emergency crew members requiring hospital treatment overall.
The sequence of events began when a white Nissan X-Trail crashed shortly after midnight. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to provide assistance. However, while they were working to help victims, a white Ford Transit van struck the emergency workers, causing the serious injuries to the paramedic and police officer.
Law enforcement has taken three individuals into custody pending investigation. A 23-year-old from Canvey faces multiple charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, motor vehicle theft, and suspected impairment. A 29-year-old Westcliff resident is also accused of dangerous driving, vehicle theft, drug possession, and driving while unfit. Additionally, a 39-year-old from Canvey is suspected of dangerous driving while impaired.
Both the injured paramedic and police officer remain hospitalized with serious injuries, according to Essex Police. The incidents happened on the southbound section of the A130 between two roundabouts. Road closures were implemented between Sadlers Farm and Bonville’s Roundabout while investigations proceeded. All roads have since reopened to traffic.
Police are actively seeking additional information from the public to support their investigation. Authorities request dashcam footage or witness accounts from anyone present during the incident.
