A groundbreaking initiative called Dragon’s Heart will deploy specially designed drones to transport blood donations across Wales. Currently, blood processed in south Wales travels by road to distribution centers, a process requiring several hours. The trial program aims to revolutionize emergency response by delivering blood samples directly to accident scenes using unmanned aircraft.
The drones involved in this project weigh approximately 55 pounds and measure 5.5 feet in width. Each aircraft features a specialized hatch on top that houses blood supplies while maintaining temperature control and minimizing vibrations during flight. The Welsh Blood Service will rigorously test all blood transported during trials, with flights limited to altitudes around 2,000 feet to ensure safety and quality preservation of precious donor contributions.
Skyports Drone Services, operating from Buckinghamshire, will manage drone operations for the program. These aircraft possess hybrid capabilities, transitioning between helicopter and fixed-wing plane modes. They can land in confined spaces, travel up to 62 miles, and withstand wind speeds of approximately 30 knots. However, partners must first obtain approval from the Civil Aviation Authority before beginning operational missions across rural Wales.
Snowdonia Aerospace Centre at Llanbedr airfield in Gwynedd will lead the partnership and host initial testing. This location offers distinct advantages, including protected airspace free from conflicting aircraft traffic and opportunities to test systems over the sea without ground risk concerns. The controlled environment allows developers to validate safety systems before expanding operations nationwide.
The program’s next phase involves transporting blood between Welsh Blood Service headquarters in Talbot Green and the Wrexham blood store, potentially reducing travel time by approximately three hours. Eventually, drone corridors could link blood stores with hospitals, enabling faster emergency responses. This approach allows multiple small shipments daily rather than single large vehicles, improving frequency and reducing patient wait times across Wales.
