Brigitte Bardot, French cinema icon, died at age 91. The actress revolutionized 1950s French cinema and became a global symbol of sexual liberation. Known as “BB” in France, she appeared in nearly fifty films before retiring in 1973 to focus entirely on animal welfare causes and activism.
Bardot was born in Paris in 1934 to a privileged family. She was discovered as a teenager after appearing on Elle magazine’s cover and quickly transitioned into film. Her breakthrough came with the 1956 film “And God Created Woman,” directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim, which portrayed a sexually independent woman and shocked American audiences.
Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, Bardot achieved international stardom. She starred in acclaimed films including “The Truth,” “Contempt,” and “Viva Maria!”, showcasing her dramatic and comedic abilities. Beyond her performances, she became a fashion trendsetter whose signature blonde tousled hair and bold eyeliner influenced beauty standards worldwide. The off-shoulder neckline she wore at Cannes in 1953 became known as the Bardot neckline.
At the peak of her career, Bardot announced her retirement at age 39, stating: “I gave my youth and beauty to men, I give my wisdom and experience to animals.” She established the Brigitte Bardot Foundation in 1986 to protect wild and domestic animals, becoming a vegetarian and passionate activist for animal rights causes.
In her later years, Bardot’s reputation became damaged by controversial statements. She faced multiple fines for inciting racial hatred due to inflammatory comments about Muslims. Her 2003 book criticized gay people and immigrants as destructive to French culture. In 2018, she dismissed actresses discussing sexual harassment through #MeToo as “hypocritical and ridiculous.”
French President Emmanuel Macron mourned Bardot as “a legend of the century,” while animal welfare organizations remembered her dedication to protecting creatures. She married four times and had one son, Nicolas, with actor Jacques Charrier, though their relationship later became strained over personal matters she disclosed publicly.
