Trump announced plans for heavily armed Navy battleships named after himself as part of a new “Golden Fleet” initiative. The Trump Class USS Defiant vessels will carry advanced weaponry and construction is set to begin soon, with operational status expected within two-and-a-half years. Initial approval covers two battleships, with plans to eventually build up to twenty-five.
The announcement represents part of a broader naval expansion strategy encompassing both manned and unmanned vessels, including larger missile-equipped warships and smaller combat craft. Officials have noted the US currently trails China in shipbuilding capacity and output. Trump made the declaration at Mar-a-Lago alongside Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan.
According to Trump, these vessels will feature hypersonic and extremely lethal weapons systems and serve as Navy flagships. He characterized them as faster, larger, and significantly more powerful than any previously constructed battleships. The construction project is expected to generate thousands of jobs through domestic manufacturing. Secretary of the Navy Phelan previously indicated Trump specifically requested a “big, beautiful” battleship-type vessel for the fleet, which will include numerous support and transport ships.
The Navy simultaneously announced additional vessel development based on the Coast Guard’s Legend-class National Security Cutter design on December 19th. Chief of Naval Operations Daryl Caudle emphasized operational requirements in the Red Sea and Caribbean, stating that current small surface combatant inventory represents only one-third of needed levels. Navy leadership stressed the need for capable blue water vessels to allow destroyers to focus on advanced combat scenarios.
Previous naval initiatives faced significant obstacles. The Constellation-class frigate, approved during Trump’s first term, was cancelled in 2024 following repeated delays and cost overruns, with approximately two billion dollars spent to deliver only two ships. China controls over sixty percent of global shipyard orders and operates the world’s largest navy. Trump has committed to reviving American shipbuilding capability since returning to office in January, stating the nation would manufacture vessels rapidly. In October, Trump negotiated a deal with Finnish President Alexander Stubb for eleven icebreakers, with seven to be constructed domestically using Finnish technical expertise.
The announcement coincides with increased US naval presence in the Caribbean due to escalating Venezuela tensions. American military operations began striking vessels allegedly transporting narcotics in September, resulting in over one hundred deaths. Trump contended that thousands of American lives have been preserved through preventing dangerous drugs from entering the country via boat operations. However, some experts have raised concerns that these military actions may contravene international laws governing armed conflict.
