- Saudi Arabia is ending its multi-billion dollar financial support for LIV Golf this season.
- The tour is seeking new investors and updating its leadership to survive.
- Financial losses have reached billions, prompting a shift toward sustainable investments.
The future of LIV Golf is uncertain as Saudi Arabia will stop funding the tour at the end of the current season. This withdrawal of multi-billion dollar support comes as the Public Investment Fund shifts toward more sustainable investments. Consequently, the series is now totally up for sale to any interested buyer.
To address this crisis, the tour plans to announce a new strategic plan this Thursday. This effort aims to secure replacement financial investors to keep the league running. Along with these financial changes, the tour will introduce new board members to provide fresh leadership during this transition.
Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor and co-founder of LIV, is expected to step down from the board. While executives believe the business can earn 100 million dollars more in 2026, they admit the series must be significantly scaled back. This likely means reducing the current 14 events.
Financial records show losses exceeding 1.1 billion dollars outside the US since 2021. Including US operations, total losses likely reach several billion dollars. Despite this, the PIF has injected over 5 billion dollars into the project, including a recent 267 million dollar capital injection.
Scheduling shifts are already visible, with a June New Orleans event postponed. This leaves no US tournaments between 10 May and 6 August, though events in Britain, Spain, and South Korea will proceed. The tour still hopes to maintain its international team model under new ownership.
High-profile players like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau remain with the tour. While some golfers have explored returning to the PGA Tour, most previously rejected reinstatement offers. It remains unclear if a total collapse would reopen paths back to traditional professional golf circuits.
