Manchester United currently maintains their original stance regarding the future of midfielder Casemiro

  • Manchester United will not reverse their decision to release Casemiro at the end of the season.
  • The midfielder will become a free agent once his expensive weekly contract expires this summer.
  • Financial restructuring and squad overhauls remain the primary reasons for the club’s firm stance.

Manchester United are standing by their choice to part ways with Casemiro once the current campaign concludes. Despite recent high-level performances from the 34-year-old Brazilian, the club does not intend to offer him a new deal. This confirms he will depart Old Trafford as a free agent this summer.

The veteran midfielder previously announced his impending exit in January. His departure aligns with his desire for transparency regarding his future to avoid late-season speculation. His current contract, worth 350,000 pounds per week, has been a focal point for the club’s leadership regarding long-term financial sustainability and roster planning.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been vocal about the necessity of reducing operational costs at the club. The co-owner expressed skepticism over the 18.2 million pounds spent annually on the former Real Madrid star’s wages. Consequently, the club declined to trigger a contract extension, prioritizing a total squad overhaul over short-term veteran retainment.

Casemiro’s recent form has nonetheless been impressive, including a seventh goal of the season against Aston Villa. Following this headed goal, he gestured toward the club crest while fans chanted for him to stay. Teammates like Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro also publicly expressed their hopes for his stay.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick noted that having a finalized decision helps provide clarity for everyone involved. While he praised the midfielder’s massive impact and leadership on the pitch, he indicated that a U-turn is unlikely. The club remains committed to the path established earlier this year regardless of the player’s contributions.
