Starmer tells MPs that clinging to Trump’s recent statements does not constitute the special relationship

  • Prime Minister Starmer defends UK’s cautious approach to Iran conflict and military response.
  • Opposition leader Badenoch criticizes government for not joining US strikes on Iranian bases.
  • Britain evacuates nationals while deploying military assets including jets and air defense systems.

During parliamentary debate, Prime Minister Starmer clarified his position on Britain’s involvement in the Middle East crisis. The government declined participation without legal justification and strategic certainty. His comments came after President Trump expressed frustration that the US could not access British military facilities for initial operations against Iranian targets.

Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch challenged the government’s defensive posture. She argued that Iranian forces had already attacked British positions and personnel required protection. Badenoch criticized the prime minister for reacting passively rather than taking preventative action. She questioned why additional defense funding had not been allocated given the escalating regional tensions.

Starmer responded by emphasizing his administration’s prioritization of civilian safety. Over 1,000 British nationals returned to the UK on Tuesday as evacuation operations continued. Charter flights departed from Oman and the United Arab Emirates, with eight commercial flights scheduled from the UAE. The government coordinated the extraction of citizens caught in the conflict zone.

The prime minister outlined Britain’s military contributions to regional security. Royal Air Force jets and ground-based air defense systems protected American and allied forces. Since Saturday morning, multiple F-35 and Typhoon aircraft conducted operations across Cyprus and the Middle East. Counter-drone systems and radar installations supported ongoing protective missions.

Additional military resources were being positioned throughout the week. Wildcat helicopters equipped with anti-drone capabilities arrived in Cyprus, while HMS Dragon, a naval vessel, prepared for Mediterranean deployment. An Iranian drone struck the Akrotiri base on Sunday with minimal impact, while two further incoming drones faced interception on Monday.
